These buildings and streets have been well preserved especially the grand colonial edifices in the immediate vicinity; many today house museums.

Built in 1892 on the site of a 17th century church that was destroyed by a cyclone in the 19th century this beautifully preserved church contains a wooden statue of Christ called the “The Lord of the True Cross” “El Señor de la Vera Cruz” which is an object of special admiration in Trinidad.

Museum - Museo de Arqueología Guamuhaya

The Museum was constructed in the 18th century and was purchased in the 19th century by Antonio Padron who extended the roof and added the portico facing the square. Guamuhaya is the name for the local area in one of the languages of the indigenous Cubans, and the museum features Pre-Columbian finds as well as articles from the time of the Spanish conquest.

Day Tour to Valley de Los Ingenios and the Manaca Iznaga Tower

Start time 10 am

Valle de los Ingenios, also named Valley de los Ingenios or Valley of the Sugar Mills, is a series of three interconnected valleys about 8kms east of Trinidad, Cuba.

The wealth that Trinidad once enjoyed was due to the sugar cane fields in this area; there are still remains of 19th century sugar mills, warehouses, milling machinery, manors, slave quarters and even a steam train that is reported to be operational.

Though some sugar is still grown here, the valley is more famous today for its status as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Backed by the shadowy sentinels of the Sierra del Escambray, the pastoral fields, royal palms and peeling colonial ruins are timelessly beautiful.

The Manaca Iznaga tower in Cuba’s Valle de los Ingenios was erected in 1750 in order to observe and control the slaves working in the sugar cane fields around the plantation. At 7 stories high and 136 steps to the top, it’s worth the climb for the view of the valley. The bells that once regulated the mill’s daily life are still intact. The Manaca Iznaga Tower is the tallest lookout tower ever built in the Caribbean sugar region.

This tour includes transportation from Trinidad and a Spanish, English or German guide who will proudly explain the history of this fascinating area.
